GRANTHAM Amateur Boxing Club’s Carl Fletcher bounced back from his debut defeat last month to record victory at Worksop on Friday.
Putting his first bout well and truly behind him, cruiserweight Carl more or less dominated throughout the three-round fight against Sheffield Lane ABC’s David Lawrenson.
Carl controlled the first round with a fine display of left jabs. Pushing forwards, Carl caught Lawrenson with some sharp right hands which rocked the Sheffield man. However, Lawrenson came back from time to time with some nice counter-punching.
With the assistance of ex-World Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch’s former amateur coach Dale McPhilbin, the Grantham corner encouraged Carl to push more on to his opponent in the second round, with jabbing combinations.
Carl appeared to lose his way slightly midway through the round, finding himself getting caught on the ropes, but by the bell the Grantham boxer was still on top.
Carl had to work hard to make sure of securing victory in the third and final round, and achieved his aim with a fine display of boxing. His defence was faultless and he caught Lawrenson several times with some fine counter-punches.
At the end of the bout, the judges awarded the fight to Carl with a majority points decision.
Grantham ABC head coach Dean Fardell said that Carl was one of the most dedicated boxers in his gym.
Dean said: “Carl’s doing really well at the moment. He likes to do his own thing but realises now he’s got to take notice of what his coaches tell him. He does listen hard.”
Carl will be back in the ring again tonight with a bout in Selby, Yorkshire.
