A sporting club needs fresh faces if it is to survive.
Grantham Hockey Club faces an uncertain future with a lack of players and is issuing a rallying call for players to bolster its squad for the 2013-14 season.
Established in 1907, the club has included four men’s teams and two women’s, but a decline in numbers left members with no choice but to take its women’s team out of league competition for the first time in more than 30 years.
Chairman David Sykes said: “Grantham Hockey Club has been part of the town’s fabric for more than a century. It would be a great shame if we were to have to fold, but that is the reality if we can’t boost our numbers and get enough players on the pitch.”
The men’s side - now Grantham’s only league hockey team - is this year returning to play in the division it won two years ago. The league season begins in October, but with barely enough players to make a full squad the team faces a challenging time ahead.
A ‘Get Back into Hockey’ event will be held at The Meres Leisure Centre from noon on Saturday, September 21, where anyone interested it giving it a try can see what the club is all about. a friendly match will be held towards the end of the event.
