GRANTHAM rowers enjoyed one of the last chances to race for Newark Rowing Club this season at Bradford Sprint Regatta on Saturday.

The club entered 14 events and came away with six wins and two second places.

George Mitchell, who attends the Priory Ruskin Academy, won his J16 (Year 11) single race and, with rowing partner Luke Wren, of the King’s School, the J18 double. Luke also went on to win the J18 single.

George and Luke, who are both on the Lincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme (LEAP), have had a highly successful year, winning seven national rowing medals and two national indoor medals between them.

Not to be outdone, the girls also put in strong performances. Rowena Price, currently in Year 12 at KGGS, won the J18 (Year 13) girls’ race and her sister Gabrielle Price won the J14 double with rowing partner and fellow KGGS student Jenna Draycot.

Emma Stewart and Suzi McMillan took second place in the J16 double. And the J15 quad, crewed by Grantham girls Hattie Swindells, Hannah Fulton, Tilly Foster and Sophie Eaves, also finished second in their event.

They will be competing again at the Nottingham City Sprint Regatta on September 29, which will be the last competition of the year.
