A Grantham youngster has won double gold in Portugal to become the youngest WKC World Champion
of 2015/16.

Charlie Digan and three other BCKA Grantham fighters representing the WKC England team flew out to Albufeira Portugal for the WKC World Kickboxing Championships.

The three-day event saw athletes from 14 different countries go head to head to try and become the current world champion.

First up to fight was six-year-old Charlie, in fine form fighting in the kids “continuous”under 25kg 13 years and under category.

He reached the final which consisted of 2x2 minute rounds and fought a bigger and older boy from Team Pakistan. Charlie did not hold back in pushing forward and showed amazing skill, technique, and courage against a boy who was 6kg heavier and at least a foot taller. The atmosphere for the final was deafening, with many spectators and teams from around the world getting behind Charlie and chanting his name.

Both fighters worked extremely hard throughout both rounds, but Charlie claimed victory with judges scoring it two to one in his favour.

Charlie’s father and club instructor Trevor said: “Charlie fought a more superior fight, displaying greater skill, and landing cleaner shots during the course of the fight.”

Charlie also won gold in the kids “points” six years and under category.

Also representing Grantham and Team England were Trevor, chief instructor Alex Barrowman Jnr, and Laurence Rose.

Both Alex and Laurence won there continuous and points categories in their weight divisions – Alex under 80kg adults, and Laurence under 75kg cadets 17 years.

Alex stole the show in the final of continuous with all areas stopping to witness Alex’s master class of speed, skill and strength, showing why he is the best in the world at his weight and why no-one has beaten him in four years.

Laurence put on a flawless display in both categories, fighting some very experienced opponents, but his speed was too much for them and he looked in control from start to finish in all his fights.

Trevor comfortably won the men’s continuous vets under 75kg, beating fighters from the Republic of Ireland and Pakistan, but just lost in the final 16-15 on points to Team Germany.

Alex and Trevor also fought in the WKC/BCKA England Five Man team event. They reached the final with both Grantham fighters winning their fights against Northern Ireland, but it came down to the fifth man to claim victory and Northern Ireland just pinched it by a couple of points.
