Grantham schools were well represented at the Lincolnshire Schools Gymnastics Championships held at The Meres leisure centre on Sunday – winning three team titles and narrowly missing out on two others.

In the boys’ competitions, King’s School took all three titles at under 13, 16 and 19, with Priory Ruskin Academy finished as runners-up up in the under 13 and under 16 mixed events.

Walton Girls were second in both the under 13 and under 16 team titles to Spalding High. Just mark separated the top two positions in the under 16s and 0.7 in the under 13s.

Not far behind in third place in both age groups were KGGS, only 0.4 behind Walton in the under 13s and 0.8 in the older age group, as the gap between the two schools gets closer each year.

Individually, Grantham’s gymnasts placde very well across the age groups and levels. There were several high scores above 8.50 in the vault competitions, showing the improvement that gymnasts have made over recent years on this apparatus.

Some development was evidently needed on the floor, although there were beautifully performed routines by some of the girls – Alice MacGowan (KGGS) and Phoebe Collins (Walton) both scored 9.0 – while Aleksandra Madejska (Walton) and Anthony Matthews (Grantham College), who produced a strong, secure floor in the boys, event, both scored 9.30, the second highest scores of the day.
