The 29th Grantham Schools Gymnastics Championships were held at The Meres leisure centre last Sunday.

There were 250 competitors ranging in age from five to 16 years from 26 local primary and secondary schools. As usual the team results were divided nicely between the schools, with several schools new to gymnastics competition coming through this year, showing promise for the future.

In the secondary competition, Walton and KGGS battled out the team events in the U13 and U16 girls to take a title each, while a consistent performance by the Priory Ruskin Academy team just pipped KGGS into second place by 0.2 marks in the U13 girls.

At Primary level, National and Cliffedale retained the Primary Boys title and the U9 girls respectively, while Allington & Sedgebrook took a commanding win in the U11 girls by nearly six whole marks.

Individually, there were some superb performances throughout the day with several high 9.0s on both the floor and vault, but the scores of the day were from Phoebe Collins (Walton) who scored maximum marks of 10.0 for both her vaults. These scores combined with two beautifully performed floor routines gave her a clear win in the Secondary Advanced Girls, to retain her title.

In the equivalent competition for the Primary Advanced Girls, the top spots were much closer, with the top two girls very evenly matched on both the floor and vault, and so the result could have gone either way. In the final results, last year’s champion Olivia Grafton-Morton (Grantham Preparatory) was just pipped by Esme Knapton-Carter (Allington & Sedgebrook). It was a brilliant, close finish to the day.

The U9 girls was also a very closely fought competition with the top 14 girls within a one mark margin of the eventual winner Ella Sutherland (Cliffedale)

Scores were also close in the U11 boys with most of the boys scoring 9.0s on the vault, and so the competition was really decided by the floor performances. Jamal Jallow (National) eventually came first with 19.1 and Harry Clements (St Mary’s) a close second on 18.8

There was another close finish in the U13 girls at both Novice and Intermediate levels. Alisha Shepherd (Priory Ruskin Academy) and Aimee Clements (Walton) were equal after floor on 8.6 in the Intermediate group but Alisha just moved ahead with her vault to take first place.

In the Novice section, Alice Heaton (Sir William Robertson Academy) scored the highest vault score of 9.3 with Neeve Pexton (Priory Ruskin Academy) on 9.1 After floor, two precise routines again by Neeve and also Jessica Baxter (Walton) secured Neeve the top spot with Alice and Jessica tied in the runners-up position.
