Dry Doddington’s Shona McCallin skippered England under-21s to a creditable fourth place in the Junior World Cup at Monchengladbach in Germany last week.

The 21-year-old former KGGS student’s team just missed out on a bronze medal, losing to India in a penalty shoot-out after their match was drawn 1-1.

On their way to the bronze medal decider, Shona’s England side knocked out hosts Germany and favourites Australia, before losing to Argentina in the semi-finals. Holland beat Argentina in a penalty shoot-out to win the competition.

Fourth place equals England’s highest ever placing in a World Cup.

Midfielder Shona has been playing for Dutch side MOP Hockey Club for the last three years and still has her heart set on making the senior England squad for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
