GRANTHAM could only raise 10 players for their latest league fixture against Ashby, and after an early injury left them playing with nine men, they were well-beaten on their travels.
In virtually the first meaningful action of the match, defender Daniel Atkinson was hit on the shin and could play no further part in the match and will be ruled out of this weekend’s home game against Nuneaton.
Grantham struggled to reorganise and soon found themselves fighting against the tide of concerted Ashby attacks, and it wasn’t long before the home side took the lead with a firm shot from the top of the D. Goalkeeper Will Leadenham made a number of outstanding saves but even he had few answers to the Ashby attackers who burst through on several occasions.
Some good work in the middle of the park from Chris Keogh and Mark Gray alleviated the pressure on occasion and wingers Alex Clark and Muzammil Pirwani showed good touches when Grantham broke into the Ashby half. One such break, right at the end of the first half, won a short corner from which Clarke fed David Nix who smashed the ball home for a deserved goal.
The second half proved just as difficult for a tiring Grantham side, although thanks to some more superb work from man of the match Leadenham and some profligacy on behalf of Ashby, they were far from embarrassed by the final scoreline. They were also forced to play 10 minutes in the second half with eight men when Nix was sent to the sin bin for a foul challenge.
In the closing quarter of the game, a second goal was added by Grantham when a strong run down the right from Gray found Clark in the circle and he made no mistake to lift Grantham spirits.
Grantham: Leadenham, Nix, Pennington, McDonald, Atkinson, Pirwani, Keogh (c), Gray, Clark, Nix.

Grantham Ladies 0
GRANTHAM’S ladies also fought hard and although they restricted Ashby to 3-0 at half time, the floodgates opened in the second half.
