Both students and instructors from a Grantham martials club have enjoyed a busy but success month.
Grantham BCKA Kickboxing/Kung Fu instructors Alex Barrowman and Trevor Digan competed at the WKC English Open in Manchester.
The competition attracts some of the best semi-contact practitioners in the country and a podium finish is awarded with WKC England team qualification and the chance to compete at the World Championships in Portugal.
Senior instructor at Grantham BCKA, Alex is current WKC world champion and won gold in the under-75kg division. He will defend his world title in Portugal. Last weekend he also competed in the WAKO British Open in Birmingham where he again took gold.
Assistant instructor Trevor Digan also qualified for the World Championships after he won bronze in the under-75kg veterans’ division.
Both Alex and Trevor will be representing the BCKA England team in the WAKO Irish Open this weekend, an event which attracts thousands of the best exponents in the world.
l Closer to home, students from Grantham BCKA made their competition debuts at the Peterborough Open last Sunday, and with some success.
Laurence Rose took first place in the under-70kg continuous category and also placed second in the semi-contact points competition.
Paul Bennett finished third in continous +95kg and second in +85kg semi-contact. Wayne Musson also fought well and was unlucky to just miss out on a podium finish in the +85kg points.
Senior instructor Alex was very pleased with his students’ achievements. He said: “I feel their trophies are no more than they deserve, as they train very hard twice a week at the club and always give 110 per cent.”
l Grantham BCKA Kickboxing/Kung Fu train on a Monday night at The Meres leisure centre between 7pm and 8.30. Sessions are open to all aged five years and above.
