Grantham Aiwakai Karate Club held its latest grading exam last Wednesday with World Master Sakagami Sensei (8th dan).
All students passed their belt upgrades and Sakagami said he was very pleased with the standard of the students, some of whom gained first class passes. Those who were not ready for their next grades took the opportunity to train with the World Master, picking up some tips for the forthcoming national championships to be held in Derby next month.
Club instructor Angie Emms said she was too was also elated with how her students had performed: “All their hard work and dedication really shone through. It’s a great privilege to train with Sakagami Sensei and we are very lucky to get him over a good few times a year to the club. He teaches worldwide and is a very busy man.”
Gradings: Elizabeth Raynor – 9th kyu; Max Wright and Coby Lee Emms – 8th kyu; Sitara Patel, Isabelle Linslay and Scarlett Lee – 7th kyu; Oliver Croston – 6th kyu; Jude Wright – 5th kyu.
l The Grantham club trains at The Meres leisure centre and has been in operation for 21 years. Beginners and lower grade sessions are held on Wednesdays between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
The club is hosting a seminar with Keith Walker at The Meres on April between noon and 3pm and will be holding a ladies only self-protection course on April 26, taught by 5th dan Angie and her daughter Rosie McGowan-Emms.
Angie also teaches a martial arts fitness class every Monday at The Meres for ladies only.
