Barnstone saloon car racer Garrie Whittaker enjoyed mixed fortunes in the latest two rounds of the Kumho Tyres BMW Championship at Rockingham over the weekend.
Championship leader Garrie qualified his BMW E36 M3 in pole position from the 35-car field on Saturday, averaging 78.16mph with a time of 1min 29.350sec for the 1.94-mile circuit
The first of two 20-minute races on Sunday saw Garrie make a good start and he was in the lead as the huge pack of cars headed into the first corner. Up to speed, he soon started to pull away from the chasing pack of cars behind him and took the chequered flag after 14 laps of racing with a winning margin of more than 13 seconds.
He made a blistering start in race two and quickly built up a lead. But a win double was ruled out when he was forced to retire with a puncture on lap seven, his first non-finish of the season.
Garrie broke the lap record in race one in 1:28.958 and, despite not picking up any points in the second race, still leads the championship by a couple of points going into the next rounds at Brands Hatch.
