Barnstone saloon car racer Garrie Whittaker suffered his first hiccup of the season at Snetterton when a mechanical cost him a race victory last weekend.

Defending the BMW Kumho Tyres Championship title, Garrie was unbeaten this season until his visit to the Norfolk racetrack.

He qualified his BMW E36 M3 on pole position at an average speed of 81.29mph for the 2.96-mile circuit.

He made a good start in race one on the Saturday and led into the first corner, only for the race to be red flagged following a three-car accident.

Garrie nosed in front from the restart and opened up a 20-second lead by the time he took his fifth chequered flag of the season.

Garrie raced into the lead in race two on Sunday and was well on his way to registering another victory when he suddenly began to slow down with two laps remaining.

He was finally caught on the last lap by Darren Fielding who went on to win, with Garrie limping home in seventh place.

Garrie said: “I think the propshaft has gone as there was a big bang out on the circuit.”

The next rounds of the championship are at Silverstone early next month.
