DRIVING his self-prepared Van Diemen Formula Ford, Grantham’s Paul Webb competed in his second sprint race of the season at the Three Sisters Circuit, near Wigan, on Sunday.

After a sucessful first outing four weeks ago at Mallory Park where he won the class and broke the class record, hopes were high.

After practice it was clear it was going to come down to one of two drivers who would win – either Phil Nelson in his 1986 Van Diemen or Paul in his 1984 model.

On his first run, Paul managed 49.49sec but Phil pipped him by 0.01 seconds. After three runs Paul’s opponent had improved to 49.06 to his own 49.08, and so it all went down to the final run.

Phil went first and made a mistake. Paul took full advantage, improving to 48.80 to take the win by 0.26 seconds.

Paul will be in action again at Curborough this Sunday and then at Aintree next Saturday.
