BARNSTONE saloon car racer Garrie Whittaker began the new season at Silverstone in the opening two rounds of the Kumho Tyres BMW Championship over the weekend.
Competing in his BMW E36, Garrie was looking for a good start in his quest to not only win class A, but also the overall title to become British champion.
Garrie completed 12 laps of the 1.6-mile circuit in qualifying on Saturday, setting a fastest time of 1min 3.519sec at an average speed of almost 93mph to claim pole position for Sunday’s first race.
The first 20-minute race saw Garrie get a storming start and within a few laps he had built up a nice lead. He soon found himself catching back-markers and had set the fastest lap of the weekend by the four lap.
Garrie was passed briefly by his nearest challenger David Kempton, but a coming together with another car put him out of contention and Garrie took the chequered flag with ease.
He made an even better start in the day’s second race and was well clear by the end of the first lap, going on to claim a second victory by a margin of just under 28 seconds from Colin Wells. With two wins out of two, Garrie leads the championship.
The next rounds of the championship will be at Snetterton Park next weekend when Garrie will be looking to take more wins to quickly cement his championship lead.
