A strong Grantham contingent contested the annual Lincolnshire Pool Championship at Skegness over the weekend, producing some good results in the 30th anniversary of the event inaugurated by Ian Wilkinson and Tim Leeson.
Top of the tree in the main event singles was Neil Davey who beat fellow Granthamian Bren McGarvey 4-3 in the best of seven final.
Neither player showed any nerves and very few mistakes were made. The first two frames were shared and then Neil went 3-1 up after clearing up twice from the break.
But Bren showed true grit to level at 3-3 to take it to a deciding frame in which Neil held his nerve to regain the title he last won 20 years ago.
Bren triumphed in the doubles with partner Stuart Gowen, defeating Sutton Bridge 3-1 in the final, while Neil won the first Friday Flyer singles and was part of the winning team alongside Andy Lucas, Chris Back and Alan Mason (Sutton Bridge) in the four-man event.
Three Grantham players featured in the mixed doubles final, with Nigel Dexter and Leanne Wakefield just edging out husband and wife duo Andy and Roz Hall.
In the World Rules Event, Paul Gwyther finished runner-up after he lost 4-3 in the final to Alan Mason. Stuart Gowen reached the semi-finals in Flyer 3, as did Craig Moore in Flyer 4, while Neil Davey and Shaun Callacher got to the semis in the doubles. Nigel Dexter was a losing semi-finalist in the seniors’ event.
