KING’S School student Ollie Bitowt is celebrating his first Great Britain call-up and will compete for the Talent Team in two rounds of the French Open Water Cup at the end of the summer.
Ollie, who trains with Lincoln Vulcans, has been in the British Swimming Talent programme for five years and has spent the last two years on the freestyle and long distance youth programme. He received his wild card entry invitation early in July and was thrilled at the opportunity to compete on the international stage.
The very same week, he competed in his first open water championships at Bosworth Water where he took gold in the 17/18 age group regional 2km swim at the Midlands Regional event.
Winning there rewarded him with an entry to the National Open Water Championships at Rother Valley two weeks later. He led from the start in his age group in the 2km event, only to make an error at the last buoy which meant he had to settle for silver.
Ollie said he was taking a short break after the Nationals before he embarked on a week’s open water training at the BEST centre in Majorca. He will then join the GB Talent Team in France.
He said: “I will be swimming in a 2.4km race in Sete near Montpellier then training with the team for a week at Grimaud before moving on to Redon in Brittany for the 5km race in September.
“Open water swimming is a new venture for me and so far, I am loving it. “
