Cliffedale Chandlers Table Tennis Club, in association with Grantham Table Tennis League, Schools Development Coaches (GAPS and local clubs) and South Kesteven District Council, are putting together a Festival of Table Tennis to celebrate that 2016 marks 50 years of Schools Development Coaching in town, together with 25 years of the South Kesteven Table Tennis Centre.

The programme of events will include an I Am Team GB Open Day on August 28, a Hard Bat competition and fun-for-all-ages competitions on September 3, high profile two and four star tournaments in October and November, Glow in the Dark Table Tennis, and more to be confirmed.

As part of the celebrations, the club is asking Journal readers to rack their brains for recollections of the sport in town throughout the decades, and to write in together with photographs old and new.

As the club moves to compile a definitive Grantham History of Table Tennis, it has highlighted three key areas on which to focus: Grantham League (est December 16, 1937), Grantham Schools, Clubs and Development Coaching.

Examples might include the ‘two player leagues’ at the KGGS, coaching and leagues at ‘The Keep’ or The Old Barracks, and the old Portakabins at Gonerby Hill Foot School.

To set memories in motion, the club’s Tim Bridle sent in this photograph and wonders if anyone knows when it was taken and who is in the picture.
