GRANTHAM Tornadoes Table Tennis Club were honoured by a visit from current women’s team world champions Singapore last Monday.
The Singapore team and coaches dropped in at the club’s KGGS venue to train and play with members, as well as offering the town coaches professional advice and encouragement to all. The team were in the UK to play in the English Open at Sheffield.
Club chairman Mark Bates said it was quite an experience to be in the presence of such outstanding players. He said: “The delight on the faces of our players pleased me immensely.”
Mark’s daughter Emily Bates, the number one Great Britain junior girl, took part in the English Open and managed to take a set off a German ranked 87th in the world.
Although she did not manage to qualify for the main event through her group, she said that she really cherished the challenge and the experience. Emily said: “I am determined to improve my game so I can compete at world class.”
