Two youngsters from Cliffedale Chandlers Table Tennis Club performed well in a four-star tournament at Stockton on Tees.

Adam Harrison and Matthew Leete faced competition from a high quality field of entries from all four home countries.

Adam showed excellent form in the Junior event, causing some major upsets on his gruelling route to the final. He was made to work hard to come through the qualifying groups and then defeated England number one Igor Morais (3-1), and tournament number four seed Danny Lawrence (3-0) to reach final.

The final saw the in-form Helshan Weerasinghe (Sussex) defeat the tiring Adam in three straight games 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 12-10).

Adam’s tournament was not quite finished as he then represented Grantham College who won the Junior Boys’ Doubles title 3-2 in the final.

Matthew also continued his excellent recent form in winning the Junior banded event, defeating James Chappell from Lancashire 3-1 in the final. After an entertaining and closely fought first two games, Mathew suddenly found another gear to close out the match 11-5, 6-11, 11-2, 11-9)

l Cliffedale Chandlers will be hosting their own two-star event at The Meres leisure centre on November 23 when local players will be taking on nationwide opponents. Spectators are always welcome.
