Cliffedale Chandlers Table Tennis Club members gave a helping hand last weekend at the BTTAD National Championship Finals being held at The Meres leisure centre.
The Cadet and junior players volunteered to help for both days of competition and primarily helped the wheelchair athletes by acting as ball girls and boys.
Club coach and volunteer co-ordinator Cathy Steeples said: “It was a privilege to offer our help, and a great opportunity for our younger players to see these athletes in action.”
The event drew many competitors from across the country including Para-Olympians Will Bayley and David Wetherill. Also competing was Lawrence John, who trains at Grantham College Table Tennis Academy. After coming through a tough group he went on to end the weekend in style by becoming the junior jational title holder.
On the Sunday, the Chandlers Cadet players were in action for the fourth and final day of National Cadet League in Wellingborough Northants.
After three previous days of tough competition, day four turned out to be no different. In all three divisions in which the club’s teams were competing, there was some outstanding table tennis played and some well-deserved victories and undeserved losses.
Chandlers A finished fourth in Division 1, while in Division 3 Chandlers B and C finished second and third respectively. In a tight Division 4, Chandlers D finished fourth.
l Cliffedale Chandlers hold their sessions at The Meres on Tuesdays and Fridays, 7-9pm, and Saturdays 12-4pm. The sessions are open to all ages and abilities.
