Matt Leete picked up a couple of good victories at his latest international appearance at the Swedish Youth Open.
The Grantham teenager, fresh from a good showing at the Hungarian Youth Open, won his first two matches in the Junior Boys’ Singles in Orebro, defeating Gal Alguetti of the USA 3-1 (11-9, 3-11, 11-5, 13-11) and Adrian Wetzel of Norway 3-0 (11-6, 11-9, 11-8).
It was enough to qualify for the knockout stage, despite seeing Russia’s Maksim Grebnev overturn a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 (5-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 12-10) in his final group match.
However, the host nation’s Vilmer Georgsson made the most of home advantage in the first round to record a 4-1 (9-11, 13-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-8) win and end Matt’s run.
Matt and partner Shayan Siraj were defeated 3-2 (4-11, 14-12, 13-11, 7-11, 11-7) by Kun Ting Beh and Zong Jun Gerald Yu of Singapore in the first round of the Junior Boys’ Doubles.
Matt is next in action at the PG Mutual National Championships which begin in Nottingham on Friday.
