KESTEVEN and Grantham Girls’ School’s love affair with table tennis continued with a third consecutive under-19s victory in the National Schools Championships at Hinckley.

The team was led by top-ranked England junior Emily Bates, with Hannah Winfield playing at number two, Emily Roys at number three, and completing the successful quartet was Hannah Noutch.

In an outstanding performance, KGGS brushed aside their first opponents Evesham High School 8-0 before demolishing Bradford High School by the same score.

The final matched KGGS up against a strong looking Wembley High School team. It started well with Emily Bates taking the opening leg 3-0 but the Grantham school were pegged back after Wembley number one Shismita Limbu whitewashed Hannah Winfield 3-0.

But KGGS were not deterred by the slight setback and indeed were spurred on to reel off the next six matches to take the final by a stunning 7-1 scoreline.

The girls became the first school team to have completed the treble twice, with KGGS having previously recorded a hat trick of victories in 1986-88.

The team were delighted with their success and will be back to try again next year, although Hannah Winfield will be ineligible to compete in the under-19 age category.
