Cliffedale Chandlers Table Tennis Club, in conjunction with GAPS, held a Primary Schools Table Tennis competition last weekend, with more than 25 local schoolchildren from 12 schools taking part.
The club’s ‘Young Leaders’ helped organise the groups of players in their age groups and ensured the smooth running of the competition by keeping track of the scores and offering advice on the game.
The competition consisted of a straight round robin style event, ensuring everyone played as many games as possible, and with medals for the first three places and an added incentive of an Easter egg for the winner, there was plenty of reason for them to give their all – and they did.
A lot of the children where playing their first competitions and all performed extremely well.
After the day’s play, the final positions were decided: Under 9 Boys – 1 Edward Hobbs (Barrowby), 2 Imran Chaudhry (Cliffedale), 3 Jaitra Raja (Gonerby Hill Foot); Under 9 Girls – 1 Amy Bridle (Cliffedale), 2 Phoenix Mason (Isaac Newton), 3 Gabriella Nalepa (Ropsley); Under 11 Boys – 1 Jake Crane (Barrowby), 2 Joseph Marlor (Allington & Sedgebrook), 3 James Hobbs (Barrowby); Under 11 Girls – 1 Polly Cullen (Bottesford), 2 Emily Winfield (Huntingtower), 3 Abigail Robinson (Isaac Newton).
The club would also like to express their thanks to the small team of volunteers that helped set up and take down the equipment required for the event.
l Cliffedale Chandlers hold training sessions at The Meres leisure centre on Tuesday, Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. The sessions are open to all ages and abilities.
The club is actively seeking more girls and women to play this wonderful sport so, if you fancy giving it a go, pop along to any training session. The first two taster sessions are free.
