TENNIS: Grantham club’s Thomas and Lydia look to play on hallowed lawns

The Road To Wimbledon concluded with Thomas White, Grantham Tennis Club’s player of the month, winning the final of the event 6-3 5-0 retired against Marco Pierbattisti.

The girls’ final saw Lydia Marshall beat Cerys Jones 7-5 7-5 in a competitive match.

The players will go through to the county finals at Eastgate next month to play for the right to play on the hallowed courts of Wimbledon during the summer.

The Mini Reds team contested the Lincolnshire final at Eastgate.

The team comprising Jacob Cullen, Luke Cullen, Matthew Barry and Eve Kimberley faced strong opposition and lost in a close match that could have gone either way.

The 14-and-under boys also faced Eastgate away and lost their singles matches. Joe Patton and Tom White enjoyed a fantastic doubles match but lost in the tie-break. Tom Horton and Lewis Picker went one better and won their tie-break.

The men’s first team of Paul White, John Quinn, Richard Cragg, Simon Cormer, Jonathan Cummins and Ed Milner lost 6-3 to Boston A. The second string went down 5-4 with the team comprising Josh King, Toby King, Richard Edgley, Michael Cragg, Phil Rann and Simeon Cook.

The men’s third team also lost, to Attenborough in the Nottinghamshire Summer League, with Colin Walton, Mark Ottey, Nigel Birch, Kane Goswell, Daniel Mole and Neil Robertson.

The mixed doubles first string continued the losing pattern, going down 13-5 to Retford with the team of Richard Cragg, Janet Ibberson, Jackie Wilson, Simon Cormer, Paul White and Mell Bloodworth. The ladies’ summer fourth team faced Newark at home and found the going tough with an honourable defeat. The team were Elaine Maplethorpe, Tracey Hobson, Rachel Pulfree, Elaine Pulfree, Lorraine Walton and Angela Anderson.
