Saturday saw the finals day of the Grantham Junior Open tennis tournament finals day took place at Arnoldfield on Saturday.

Sponsored by Belvoir Fruit Farms, the seven-day tournament had its largest ever entry with 33 events and 285 players, with juniors from up and down the country plus added wheelchair, adult and senior events.

Sixty-four Grantham Tennis Club players competed with some of the best players in the country and achieved some great results.

The Mini Red event (8 and under) saw two Grantham players contest the final. Joshua Harris won as he managed to pip Hugo Dunn in a very competitive final.

In an extremely high standard tournament, many Grantham players performed well. Andrew Isaac finished third in the 18 and under singles, won the men’s doubles with Seb Darke (Tennis Buddies) and open mixed foubles with Holly Horsfall (Thongsbridge)

The boys’ under-18 doubles saw Grantham TC pairing Joe Patton and Lewis Picker achieve their best ever win.

Angela Halton paired up with fellow Lincs county player Lucy Evans and finished as runners-up in the girls 14 and under doubles. In the junior consolation competitions, Angela won the 14 and under event and her sister Christie Halton was runner up in 10 and under. Oliver White was runner-up in the 16 and under.

The open ladies’ event saw Grantham’s new full time coach Yasmin Clarke reach the final where she pushed Holly Horsfall from Yorkshire to three sets.

In the new senior events, Grantham TC chairman Lianne Tapson beat Maia Dunn in the 35+ singles. Melanie Bloodworth paired up with fellow Grantham player Sarah Patton to win the ladies’ 35+ doubles and Jon Quinn in the 35+ mixed doubles to triumph in that as well. Robert Isaac and Nigel Birch were runners-up in the 35+ mens doubles.

Awards were kindly donated by Totemic and were given to a girl and boy who the tournament committee agreed upheld the LTA fair play values – these were given to Orla Cooper, of Thongsbridge TC, and Roman Khela (Kibworth TC).
