Grantham Tennis Club men’s third team made a successful debut in the Lincolnshire League at the weekend.
Playing away at a strong Boston side, the team consisting of captain Colin Walton, Kane Goswell, Nigel Birch, Rob Isaac, Paul Kimberley and Mark Ottey triumphed 8-1 overall.
Nigel and Rob Played some good tennis to win their three rubbers comfortably, with solid hitting from the baseline giving their opponents stood no chance. Mark’s solid ground strokes set up partner Paul at the net as they also won all three of their rubbers in straight sets.
Colin and Kane played well but made the day very hard for themselves. The first rubber went to a second set tiebreak, which they managed to win, with the same thing happenning in their second match. They started the last rubber well, winning the first set, but then narrowly lost the second and the third set championship tiebreak 13-11.
l The age 16 and under boys won 9-0 away on grass courts at Bourne with the team comprising Dom Newcombe, Michael Cragg, Joe Patton and Harry Gibbons.
The boys played some great tennis, winning all of both their singles and doubles comfortably in straight sets. Dom and Michael triumphed 6-0 6-0, whilst Joe and Harry’s match was a bit closer at 6-4 7-5.
l Grantham men’s first Aegon team played at home to a strong David Lloyd Burton Waters side with the team of Simon Cormor, Richard Smart, Dom Newcombe and Andrew Isaac.
Richard and Andrew both managed to win their singles, with Simon winning his by default when his opponent failed to turn up. Dom lost his match 6-4, 6-2. They were victorious in both their doubles matches for a final 5-1 winning scoreline.
l Grantham Mini Red As triumphed 12-4 at home to a strong Boston side with the team of Toby Cullen, Luke Cullen, Lilia Dunn, and Oliver Anderson, captained by Richard Surtees.
Luke, Lilia and Oliver won all four of their matches, but Toby was narrowly beaten in all of his.
