Grantham Tennis Club’s newest mixed doubles team claimed the Nottingham League Division Six title on Sunday.
Their 10½ sets to 7½ victory over Sutton Bonington completed an unbeaten debut season.
The winning team comprised John Legard, Elaine Maplethorpe, David Hall, Sue Taylor, captain John Petkovic and Karen Pye-Smith.
The match was played in very windy conditions and suffered numerous rain delays. After the first round of matches, Grantham led 4-2. The second round was very close, ending three apiece, which meant Grantham held a reduced lead of 7-5 going into the final round, with six sets to play for and Grantham requiring 2½ for outright victory
Hall and Taylor were first to finish, winning 2-0, leaving a further ½ set required to clinch the win and with it the league title.
This was secured by Legard and Maplethorpe who, by winning their first set and drawing the second, won a further 1½ points
It was a tremendously hard fought victory against Grantham’s main rival for the league’s top spot.
The team is now looking forward to promotion and further success next summer.
l Grantham ladies’ fourth team travelled to Mansfield where they earned themselves a comfortable victory.
The team, captained by Jo Carstairs who unable to play, consisted of Katy Dines, Sue Cox, Jo Jones, Sue Rowland, Laura Dixon and Angela Anderson.
The ladies showed their intentions of winning the league by sealing a 18-0 win over the Mansfield side and will be looking to carry on the season the way they have started.
