A GRANTHAM kick-boxer will contest an English title bout at Newark next Saturday (March 19).
Thirty-seven-year-old Mickey Blackburn says he is in the best shape of his life and will face Southern area title holder Lucjan Lniany to decide the WKA English 72.5kg title.
Fellow Grantham lad Grant Duller, 25, is also on the all-star card at Kelham Hall and will take on Joe Anderson in a non-title 105kg weight category fight.
The Grantham pair have been training intensively for their fights for many months, with a typical training week including two sparring sessions, an altitude session, two kick-boxing/boxing-specific circuits, stamina tests and pad work.
Mickey has been fighting for almost 10 years and began his career with Grantham’s Dave Miller. After Miller retired six years ago, Mickey joined Newark Martial Arts where he trains under Dean Sugden.
Since joining the Newark club, Mickey has enjoyed numerous wins including the EFK Midlands area title in 2009.
Mickey said: “Since starting training all those years ago, it was always my dream to fight for an English title and now I have that chance. My training has been relentless and I am in the best shape of my life.”
Grant has been training under NMA’s Sugden for three years in which time he has fought five bouts, winning four, with three knockouts, and recording one defeat. He said he expects his bout against Anderson to be his toughest to date.
Grant said: “My training in the build up to this fight has been very intense. I’m punching harder than ever and with the speed of a middleweight.”
