BASKETBALL: Outlaws triumph in county cup

Grantham Honda Outlaws

Grantham Honda Outlaws

Lincolnshire Cup

Grantham Honda Outlaws 118(50)

Boston Speedfire 108(40)

FOLLOWING a mixed season, Grantham Basketball Club won the final of the Lincolnshire Cup at RAF Cranwell.

The cup rules dictated that Grantham started the game with 10 point lead, accumulated over the season, as they faced a strong Boston team.

The game started well for both teams with the first quarter very tight, and the defence of both teams making it difficult to score. When Grantham did manage to score, it was Grassitelli and Hart with the baskets.

In the second quarter, things began to open up with Boston scoring six unanswered points. Grantham found success on the fast break with Bradbury scoring. Young Mills managed to get a basket at a key time as Boston were stepping up the pressure.

Grantham and Boston exchanged baskets with Grassitelli making most of them for Grantham. Towards the end of the half Grantham let things slip by turning the ball over and missing easy baskets, allowing Boston to end the half only one point down.

Grantham came out for the second half on fire. Captain Prothero hit a three-pointer and that set the tone with Oswin, Rigby and Davis all getting on the score sheet. Hart top scored in the third quarter by hitting a couple of jump shots and some big three-point plays.

Outlaws won the third quarter by 16 points, putting them in a strong position, but fouls caught up with them.

Boston closed the gap to five points but player of the game Grassitelli closed the game out as Outlaws finally ran out winners by 10 points.

Scorers: Grassitelli 34, Hart 19, Prothero 3, Davies 3, Mills 2, Rigby 2, Bradbury 2, Midgley 2, Taylor 1.
