HOCKEY: Nine-goal defeat for nine-man Grantham

East Midlands 2 (1st)

Daventry 9

Grantham 0

NINE-man Grantham gave everything but returned home soundly beaten.

The game started in a lively fashion with Daventry attacks coming in wave after wave and Grantham defending stoutly. Daventry were wasteful with their chances and after 15 minutes the scores were still level.

The two attacking players for Grantham, Alex Clark and Chris Keogh, worked hard with the little ball that they had and made Daventry realise that just because Grantham were depleted didn’t mean they couldn’t cause problems

Daventry continued to create chances and they finally broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal. Grantham had a chance to equalise from a short corner but couldn’t convert the opportunity and two quick goals from Daventry saw the half time score stand at 3-0 thanks to the hard work of Grantham keeper Darren Hale and defenders Ben Lane and David McDonald.

The second half saw Daventry regroup and change their tactics to try to exploit the space down the flanks, using their better players on the wings it saw them create more goal-scoring chances in the second half, which led to them scoring six unanswered goals.

The Grantham midfield of Andy Barton, Benjie Groom, Higgs and Jem Hill ran continuously throughout the game and Barton had a good opportunity to get Grantham on the score sheet but was thwarted by the Daventry keeper.

Man of the match was Chris Keogh.

Grantham: Darren Hale, Ben Lane, David McDonald, Andy Barton, Simon Higgs (captain), Benjie Groom, Jem Hill, Alex Clark, Chris Keogh.

Other results: Grantham 2nd 2 Wellingborough 3, Grantham Ladies 0 Bosworth 13.
