Notts Moderns 13
PLAYING into the wind and the setting sun, Bingham did not start well and went behind to a penalty after eight minutes.
Bingham missed a penalty of their own and had numerous other chances to get off the mark before a backs to the wall final five minutes brought the half-time whistle.
Chris Garrod switched with Andy Towers and moved into the centre and after 10 minutes Anthony Thomas slotted a penalty to bring Bingham level. But this was almost immediately wiped out as Moderns hit a great penalty into the wind to retake the lead 3 – 6.
The backs were beginning to show better intent with the forwards establishing good field position but poor final ball control kept letting Bingham down. With 20 minutes to go, Bingham pressure eventually told as they drove Moderns off their own scrum and from resultant scrums, Jonathan Thomas fashioned an opening and brother Anthony went under the posts and then converted to make it 10 – 6.
Bingham then completely relaxed and were punished. From a free kick five metres out the Bingham defence went to sleep and an elated Moderns scored under the posts and converted to retake the lead, 10 – 13.
Bingham were once again chasing. After several phases of play from a line out 10 metres out, the ball came to Lee Fretwell with the Moderns defence committed for Lee to score unopposed. Anthony slotted the conversion for a four point lead. Bingham then held firm for the last few minutes to take a thrilling victory.
Bingham’s next Match is on Saturday December away to Newark 3rds.
