Kesteven 112

Amber Valley 0

KESTEVEN totally dominated against a weakened Amber Valley, with the Grantham side eager to overcome their disappointing defeat to Sleaford.

Kesteven took a few minutes to settle but after 10 minutes prop Gavin Purves burrowed over from short range for the opening try.

From the restart, Tony Woolerton fielded the ball and set off on a 60-metre charge upfield. This was stopped ilegally and from the quickly taken penalty, Phil Jordan crossed for his first try.

It was now all Kesteven and Dan Turner added his first try under the posts after a fine run. He turned provider moments later. Aaron Whittaker rescued a loose ball on the touchline, fed Turner and followed up to take a pass 40 metres out to run in at the posts. Matt Harland converted these two tries and the bonus point was secure after just 20 minutes.

Amber Valley had no answer to the powerful straight running of the Kesteven team and Sam Durrance added a quick fire brace of tries, running in both from distance before Harland scored his try and Phil Jordan registered his second. Harland added two more conversions to make the half time score 48-0.

The second half started badly for the visitors with a yellow card for preventing Kesteven taking a quick tap penalty. From the retake, Purves powered over for his second try and then Turner and Jordan raced in from their own half to score two more. Harland converted two of those before Valley were restored to 15.

There was a slight lull in the scoring and Kesteven rang the changes. Odams replaced Purves and Midgely came on for Pert.

The domination by the home team soon resumed as Ollie Wood got the first of his tries. Harland converted with a finely judged kick before he was replaced by Parker, who was immediately in action and scored with his first touch, supporting another fine break by Woolerton.

The last 15 minutes saw Kesteven run in further tries from Wood, Rupert Jordan, Dan Turner and Whittaker. Parker added four conversions to complete the rout.

All in all it was a fine controlled performance by Kesteven. Woolerton was the outstanding player and led the way with his dynamic running. Goodrich also ran strongly and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Phil Jordan led by example with his four tries, closely followed by Dan Turner with his three.

Kesteven: Turner, Whittaker, P. Jordan, Goodrich, R. Jordan, Harland, Wood, Sheardown, Brown, Purves, Pert, Carew, Durrance, Turner, Woolerton. Reps: Odams, Midgely, Parker.
