Kesteven under-12s won the Plate competition at the annual Peterborough Festival.
Ks’ first match in Pool saw them defeat a mixed side of Bourne and Market Deeping 4-0 with tries from Harris, Duncomb, Singer and Bishop. Another 4-0 win followed with tries from Ted Morris, Duncomb and Singer.
But the Black Army lost their final pool game 3-0 to Old Northamptonians and so, finishing as runners-up, went into the Plate final where they faced Oakham.
Kesteven conceded first but a powerful run by Bob Singer resulted in a much needed, morale-boosting equalising try just before half time.
And it was Singer who put Ks ahead with his second try of the game, and he went to score a third when he picked the ball up five metres off the Oakham line following a spillage from a maul and dived over for the match winner.
Kesteven: Ainsworth, Bishop, Clink, Cowgill, Duncomb, Harris, Jinks, Lyle, Morris, Peacock, Pepper, Sacker, Shennan, Singer, Spencer, Watmough.
West Bridgford 10
Victory put Kesteven top of the league and Fletcher went over to give the home side their first try, with Grinney’s conversion attempt just skimming the post.
Some great drives and good handling, saw Allen power through for Ks’ second try. Ryder and Bloodworth put in some good tackles to prevent the visitors scoring before the break.
The second half was more evently contested with West Bridgford testing the Kesteven defence on several occasions.
But the home side rallied and went upfield for Pirie to charge through the defence and go over for Ks’ third try. Grinney slotting the ball well for the extra points to make it 19-0.
Just when it looked like Ks were bossing the game, Bridgford hit back with two quick tries.
Kesteven went looking for another try to give them a bonus point and it came through Bosworth who went over following a tremendous drive and scrum.
