Melbourne 10

Kesteven 18

KESTEVEN travelled to Derbyshire on a gloriously sunny day to take on Melbourne RFC, who they had narrowly lost to in the final league game of last year. The team was similar to last week’s, with just Harland, Hanson and Danford being brought into the line-up.

The game started well for Ks and the pack looked to have the edge in the set piece. An early move saw Matt Harland break the line, but he was tackled short and the ball turned over. Dan Turner also made a great break, but Melbourne again defended well to scupper the attack.

Against the run of play, Melbourne won a penalty in the Kesteven half, which they converted. Shortly after the restart, the home team’s scrum-half slipped a tackle on half way and broke blind. He had enough pace to run in and score under the posts. Melbourne again converted and took a 10-0 lead.

Just before half time, Ks won a penalty of their own and Harland stepped up and converted to keep his side in contention.

The second half started well for Ks and they immediately camped in the home 22. Melbourne gave away two penalties, one of which Harland converted to bring the score back to 10-6. Ks continued to attack and eventually got the breakthrough when Harland joined the line and sent a miss pass out to Durrance who finished in the corner. Harland again converted to put Ks in front.

Melbourne came back well and made some good yards through the centre and out wide. But Ks defended strongly and turned over several attacks, particularly prominent being the back row of Flear, Turner and Woolerton.

As the heat took its toll, Ks brought Sayle and Odams on into the pack. Melbourne continued to attack but an excellent turnover and break by Woolerton brought Ks up to half way. Parker then put in a good kick which the Melbourne full back was forced to touch down behind his own line. From the resulting scrum, Ks pushed Melbourne back and Lines was able to touch down for the winning score.

Man of the match was Purvis.
