Steve Ablitt (Aldershot and Farnham) and Ian Boneham (Nottinghamshire AC) crossed the finish line hand in hand to share the top spot.

The 13.1-mile course started outside South Kesteven Sports Stadium and took the 250 runners up Dysart Road to Barrowby, down The Drift to Grantham Canal and along the towpath to the Rutland Arms at Woolsthorpe.

Runners then had to climb the hill out of Woolsthorpe towards Denton and headed up Casthorpe Hill to Barrowby and back to Trent Road.

Race organiser Dave Eldridge was pleased with the turn-out which was up by 120 on last year and attracted athletes from far and wide. He said: "One chap e-mailed us from Hong Kong on Wednesday night and turned up and ran the race on Sunday.

"We had one from Guernsey and Scotland and from all over the Midlands."

The club gave out commemorative pint mugs to the male runners and wine glasses to the women.

Dave said: "Runners commented on how good a course it was and how well organised it was. It's going to go on every year now."

The accompanying 3km fun run also attracted a larger field, up by 30 from last year to 98 entrants, the youngest being just four years old.

The charity event raised around 400 for the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance and St John Ambulance.
