Saturday, 6am - A HIGH performing girls' school has gained specialist language status.Walton Girls' High School already has specialisms in performing arts and applied learning but its performance was deemed so high that it was asked by the Government to apply for a third.

The school's director of languages Lynn Cameron said: "Having language college status is very important to us, and we are delighted to have achieved such an accolade.

"As a school, language college status means that we are going to be able to offer a wide range of exciting language opportunities to students, staff and the local community."

The school has staged a lot of events since gaining the status including a Franco Vision Song Contest and dance competitions.

Language workshops are now a regular occurrence for pupils at the school.

Ms Cameron said: "We were delighted to welcome representatives from Nottingham Trent University who came along to give language taster sessions in Italian, German and Spanish.

"These took place in language lessons and were enjoyed by students and staff alike."

Pupils were also offered sessions in Hungarian and Italian. The school has been helping local primary schools with language teaching and will be offering evening classes in Spanish to the community from September.
