12/12/07 - Developer Bovis Homes said it has begun controversial roadworks in Springfield Road, Grantham, on the instructions of Lincolnshire County Council.
Enraged traders only found out on Thursday that the road would be closed for 20 weeks, causing massive tailbacks on the way into town during the festive period.

Today Bovis Homes told the Journal is has begun work before Christmas to meet a timetable set by LCC.

A spokesman said: "The new deadline meant work had to start before Christmas. The work was originally scheduled to be completed by April 11, 2008, but we are now have an earlier deadline of March 7, 2008.

"Had the start of the work been delayed until after Christmas, it would have been impossible to meet the new deadline agreed with LCC.

"We will aim to keep any disruption to both road users and residents to an absolute minimum while work on the site and road improvement continues."

LCC divisional highways manager Brian Thompson said: "The county council thought carefully over allowing the works to start in December but unfortunately any delay in the works would have resulted in delays in other works programmed to start as soon as the work on Springfield Road is finished.

"Lincolnshire County Council apologise for any inconvenience but would encourage the public to continue to use the facilities in the town and plan their journey to minimise delay."
