A production by The Grantham Singers has been recognised with an award from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA).

Their 2013 Diamond Jubilee Concert has been awarded the ‘Best Concert Award’ for the East Midlands, Region 5, at a regional awards ceremony in Loughborough.

The nominees and winners of the awards are decided by regional NODA representatives who review and grade each show in their area. Regional NODA representative Peter Breech said in his review: “Congratulations to all who were involved in presenting this gem of a concert.” He particularly complimented the characterisation and voices of the cast.

The concert consisted of a semi-staged, modern interpretation of ‘Trial by Jury’ by Gilbert and Sullivan in the first half and was followed by a gala concert featuring numbers from all the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas in the second half.

Elaine Bishop, Musical Director for The Grantham Singers, explained that this is the first time this award had been given and why she felt the society were worthy recipients. She said: “Because the majority of our productions are concerted versions of popular operettas, we normally do not fit into one of the traditional categories for the awards. However, Peter Breech (our NODA rep) recognised the talent, attention to detail and excellent singing in our production and decided it was worthy of being recognised by a special concert award - a great honour for us.”

The Grantham Singers are just about to start rehearsals for their production of ‘The Sorcerer’ by Gilbert and Sullivan. Rehearsals are on Monday evening from 7.30pm (starting September 8) at ChristChurch church hall on Finkin Street. New members are invited to join their chorus and music is provided.
