New to Grantham Carnival this year is Battle of the Bands, a competition on the run-up to carnival weekend when the final will take place.
The finale is set to breathe fresh air into the music offering at the carnival, which this year falls on June 13-15.
Split into acoustic and bands, the first heat takes place on Thursday of this week. Kick-starting the battle is acoustic (solo, duo, trio) at Oscar’s Wine Bar, Guildhall Street, between 7pm and 11pm. Further heats follow on May 29 and June 5.
Spaces are still available in Thursday’s heat, which will feature four acts in total. Each will play a 30-minute set, with the winner going through to the final at the carnival in Wyndham Park on Sunday, June 15, between 2pm and 4pm.
And there are prizes up for grabs. First prize is a day in SR Studio with Shane Cattermole, which includes a five-hour recording session, mixing and mastering. Additional studio time will be available at £15 per hour.
Meanwhile, the first of the band heats is on Sunday, between 3pm and 7pm, followed by heats on June 1 and June 8.
These will take place at Chameleon Music Bar in Steakhouse, in High Street. Again, there will be four bands in each heat, each playing a 30-minute set. A winner from each heat will go on to the final on Saturday, June 14, between 1pm and 5pm.
First prize is a day in Superfly Studios with Andy Banfield, valid for three months. It includes an eight-hour recording session and mixing, with additional studio time available for £20 per hour.
