The first of a series of Arts Break events took place at ChristChurch, Finkin Street, this month when organist Geoffrey Winter played at the venue.

Mr Winter illustrated a presentation called The Art of the Organist in which he shared stories about his experiences as an organist and played a variety of music from Bach to the present day. Mr Winter was presented with the British Empire Medal this year for his contribution to music.

The Arts Break events will take a look at different forms of the Arts and take place from 12.30pm to 1.15pm on the second Thursday of each month. The next event will be on June 13, led by local artist David French on Painting the Racing Animal. Further events will follow on July 11, August 8 and September 12.

A church spokesman said: “The sessions will cover various aspects of the Arts. Each session will look at one particular art form. The season will include music, words, photography and painting and the aim is to educate as well as entertain.

“The hope is that the timing may coincide with the lunch hours of workers and students, and that shoppers might organise their day so that they can attend. The organisers are happy that people bring their sandwiches and cold drinks will be available.”

Entry to each session costs £3 and proceeds go to the church.
