Wednesday, 10.35am - STUDENTS at Grantham College organised a wind farm awareness day on Tuesday so they could find out more about the proposal to build 10 turbines north of Grantham.
Organised by the Students' Association, the event was attended by energy firm Infinergy, which plans to build the wind farm near Long Bennington, and members of pro-wind farm campaign group Sustainable Energy Alliance.

No one from anti-wind farm campaign group BLOT - Belvoir Locals Opposing Turbines - was able to attend.

Students were able to ask questions about the proposed wind farm and were particularly concerned with issues of efficiency and the scheme's potential carbon footprint.

At the end of the event, students were asked to show whether they support or oppose the Thackson's Well project by signing the appropriate sheet of paper.

There were 234 signatures in support and 14 against.

Student liaison officer Drew Walsh said: "The SEA came in to speak to students in February and the students decided they would like to know more about opposing views too, which is why we organised this awareness day. Unfortunately no one from BLOT could attend but we decided to go ahead.

"Not all students are 16-years-old and we have 4,000 people here who this potentially affects. It is their future too and they want to know more about the issue.

"Some students had no idea that a wind farm was planned in the area until we held the event so it was a good way of raising awareness.

"Most were supportive, but the ones that live near the proposed site do not support it at all."
