County council chairman toured the town's A.R.P. departments

Chairman of Kesteven County Council Sir Robert Pattinson is pictured at Grantham’s Guildhall in October 1939.

Invited by the Mayor, Coun Stanley Foster, Sir Robert and his county war emergency committee colleagues made an extensive tour of each of the Air Raid Precautions departments throughout the Grantham Borough, which were staffed by 650 voluntary workers and just three paid officials.

At a subsequent dinner with the Mayor, Sir Robert said he was entirely satisfied with what he had seen and said the town’s A.R.P. services “cannot be surpassed anywhere in the Kingdom”.
