Have your say

THIS collection of photos is just a small sample from an amazing archive brought to the Journal by Sarah Porter of Harrowby Lane, Grantham.

Sarah is part of the family that owned Porter’s shoe shops in Grantham for generations. The last shop closed around 20 years ago, but Sarah and her family will be remembered by many Journal readers.

The archive dates back to 1860, when an intriguing family portrait was taken of four generations of the family.

In another photo, dating from 1906, Sarah’s grandfather, Edwin and Jessie Porter are pictured outside their shop, in a now-demolished row of houses in Bluegate, Grantham.

Later, Sarah’s father John was pictured with Edwin in another portrait that echoes the picture taken in 1860.

Another picture shows Edwin showing his craftsmanship skills in his workshop.
