Among the field for the 1989 London Marathon was a large contingent of runners from Grantham.

They are pictured just before heading for the capital to join over 25,000 other runners from all over the UK and overseas.

It was a particularly special day for 18-year-old Grantham College student Sarah Hill, who was the youngest competitor in the race. She became something of a TV star for the day giving pre-race interviews.

Sarah completed the 26.2 mile course in 5 hours 54 minutes.

Leading the Grantham contingent home was John Ellerby, who finished inside three hours.
