Memory Lane: Grantham man Pete, from school cricket to European football

All-round sportsman Pete Hoyes will jog a few memories with these pictures from the past.

Cricketer, footballer and keep-fit enthusiast Pete is featured in each of the pictures, two of which date from the 1960s and were published in the Journal.

The third picture was taken some 20 years later and shows footballers from Marco’s engineering firm in Grantham.

The oldest picture, taken in 1962, is of a cricket team from Springfield School in Grantham after they won the Journal Shield final.

Pete, who lives in Kenilworth Road, Grantham, is in the back row, far right.

Some of the school chums were also members of Grantham army cadets, who are pictured in 1963 at a camp at Southshields where they won a national fitness competition.

They are, from left, Mick (Bear) Anger, Pete Hoyes, Paul Needham, Bill Clark, Bob Short, Mac McKinder (officer), Dodger Edwards (with the cup), ... Dawson, Steven Whorlow, Terry Clarke, Brian Scullthorpe (Bones), Tony Betts.

The third pictures was taken in 1981 and shows Pete in the back row on the far right as a member of Marco’s football team.

The squad were smartly turned out for the pictutre in front of the main gates of the factory before setting off on a tour of Italy.

Pete was unable to add many more details, but we would love to find out more about the factory lads’ European adventure.
