There’s a noticeable mix of delight and sadness in this photograph from 1987.
Delight that the school holidays are about to start but sadness that their school will no longer be there for them in September.
This photograph was taken by the Journal to mark the closure of Foston CE School in July. The children were to transfer to Long Bennington, where they would be joined by Foston CE teacher Mrs Liz Flatters.
Before the closure a service of thanksgiving was held, conducted by the Rev Ron Amis, with staff and parents invited along.
A final farewell was then held at the village hall where Peggy Neave of Chapel Lane, Foston, was presented with a figurine of a Victorian boy to mark her 20 years of service to the school as caretaker.
In the picture, as well as the pupils, are Mrs Stokes, Mrs Flatters, Mrs Neave and the Rev Ron Amis.
