ARENA UK was buzzing with events on Tuesday night when I went to find out about the A1 Racing Club.
When I walked into the massive hall, which the remote control car club has called home for the last three years, I could not believe how many people were there.
And as the first race kicked off I soon found out why.
Everyone watched as the high speed cars were flying competitively around the purpose-built course, which features ramps, tight twists and climbing bends.
I was offered the chance to have a go but after seeing a couple of the expensive cars land on their roofs I decided to leave the experts to it - although I wish I had been braver as it looked like great fun.
I couldn’t even follow who the winner was as the cars were so quick around the course with helpers flipping them back on to their wheels after every mishap.
Another thing that surprised me as I was watching the races was the incredible variety of age groups that were present, all waiting for their races to be called.
Each of the racers is given a ranking so the races are matched with their level. The cars, which the participants were working on tirelessly until minutes before the race, also seemed to be matched. I don’t think I have ever seen so many different remote control cars.
I’ve never been to an event like this before and the only car I own gets me to and from work but I had great fun at the club and would recommend it to anyone, young or old, who is looking for a new hobby and wants to spend an entertaining evening with a very friendly group.
If you would like to have a go car kits are priced from £120 and beginners can have a go at the new Thursday night club. Membership is £30 per year.
