American basketball player Jimmy 'Jumpshot' Smith joins Grantham school

Pupils at Cliffedale Primary School in Grantham have been enjoying the expertise of a former American basketball player.

Jimmy ‘Jumpshot’ Smith, a former player for Loughborough All Stars and a Nottingham Wildcats coach, has joined the school’s Year 3 and 4 PE classes and after school club for seven weeks.

Kirsty Graham, Cliffedale’s new deputy headteacher, said: “Jimmy has been a fantastic addition to the Cliffedale family. He is a huge presence standing at 6ft 7ins tall but has such a lovely manner with the children.

"The quality of skills that they are picking up from Jimmy are superb and we hope to invite him back again. We also hope we might become good enough to arrange some friendly matches with local schools.”

Jimmy has spent much of his adult life promoting basketball as Nottinghamshire’s basketball development officer. His passion was rewarded in 2012 when he was offered the chance to become a ‘games maker’ at the London 2012 Olympics.
