The licensees of the White Lion in Colsterworth, Dave and Madeleine Smith, are celebrating after winning the Punch Taverns Area Pub of the Year Award.

They received the award at a special presentation evening held earlier in the month at the Great Northern Hotel in Derby.

Dave admitted the award came as a complete surprise to them.

He said: “Punch Taverns invited us to attend the awards night and said we had been shortlisted, but it wasn’t until we got there that we realised we had won.

“It came as a nice surprise. It’s always good to be appreciated.”

The White Lion picked up the area award ahead of other Punch Tavern pubs in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

Dave added: “Part of our success is down to having an excellent chef and great staff. We get a lot of very positive feedback about our staff and how helpful and welcoming they are.

“As well as having a busy restaurant, it is important to us that the White Lion is still very much a village pub, with a pool table and darts board. It’s a part of the community.

“We are lucky to have such really nice customers. We get excellent support from local people and have other regulars who travel here from town and elsewhere. We are also building up a good passing trade from people travelling up and down the A1.”

Dave and Madeleine have run the White Lion for the last seven-and-a-half years.
