In recognition of nearly 30 years supporting the Girl Guides Association, a Grantham resident received this year’s ‘Tom Childs’ memorial award.

Magdalene Leicester from Chatsworth Avenue, has held various positions within the Association, including as a residential advisor to the Brownies and as district commissioner.

The award which is in its eighth year and sponsored by Londonthorpe and Harrowby Without Parish Council, is a memorial to former parish clerk of 29 years Tom Childs.

It is presented to up to two members of the parish annually who have given their time and effort to assist other people or organisations in the community.

Mrs Leicester received the award at a lunch and ceremony held at the officers’ mess in the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks on June 19, which was also attended by Chair of the Parish Council Jenny Foster, Kath Childs, Graham Leicester and other parish councillors.

During the ceremony the winner was presented with a framed certificate and a £200 cheque as a donation towards her favourite charity, which she unsurprisingly gave to the Grantham Girl Guides.

Creator of the accolade and chairman of the award committee, Major Dennis Hannant, said: “I thank Mrs Leicester on behalf of the parish and the nation for her outstanding contribution to the lives of young children in the parish, in Grantham and other parts of Lincolnshire.

He added: “Without the dedication of people like Mrs Leicester, many young people would not enjoy their early years to the same extent and would not go on to realise their full potential.”
